Mayor Adams Proclaimed May 7, 2012 World AIDS Orphans Day!

On Wednesday, May 2, 2012 Mayor Sam Adams proclaimed May 7, 2012 World AIDS Orphans Day in the City of Portland!

At 9:30am in City Council Chambers at Portland City Hall, Mayor Sam Adams issued the proclamation.

World AIDS Orphans’ Day (WAOD) is a global grassroots campaign to draw attention to and advocate on behalf of the more than 16 million children orphaned by AIDS. Since its inception in 2002, thousands of people have participated in World AIDS Orphans Day events in more than 20 countries, and 800 mayors and elected officials in more than 40 countries have signed pledges advocating for the need to address the orphan crisis.

PAGAC is participated in this year’s World AIDS Orphans’ Day by honoring AIDS orphans at its 5th annual event on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Mercy Corps with expert panelists and dialogue with the community about a pandemic that still exists with over 16 million AIDS orphans worldwide.

More than 1,000 children are infected with HIV every day. By providing counseling, testing and access to treatment services and medicines for expectant mothers, we can reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission drastically.


The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation works to ensure that more pregnant women promptly receive the treatments they need by improving the availability of HIV testing and counseling in pregnancy, as well as CD4 testing to determine their treatment eligibility and to assess their overall health status.

CARE works on finding and fighting the underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. CARE places an emphasis on helping women by improving education, preventing the spread of HIV, improving access to clean water and helping survivors of natural disasters and war. They also work on economic projects and protecting natural resources. The majority of their programs cover the following areas: agriculture and natural resources, cost-cutting initiatives, economic development, education, emergency relief, health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, clean water.

  





  

    
  
        
  
  
  
        
EBZEF was started in honor and in memory of Elizabeth Bowers, a Peace Corps volunteer who died while working in Zambia. The fund was started by friends and family members of Elizabeth. EBZEF provides scholarships for women and girls in Zambia. The HIV Day Center is a drop-in center for low-income people living with HIV/AIDS.  Services include hot breakfasts and lunches, access to phones, a mail drop, computers with internet access, clothing, laundry, showers, and hygiene supplies.  A social worker/counselor is on staff and available by appointment or reservation.  Recreational activities such as field trips and games are also available.  Verification of HIV status required. EMO HIV Services operates the HIV Day Center and the Daily Bread Express.   The HIV Day Center is a multi-service center serving low income individuals living with HIV/AIDS.  Services include meals, counseling, laundry and shower facilities, clothing, computers and telephones, foot care, acupuncture and much more while facilitating a welcoming and supportive peer community. The Imani Project focuses on three main areas: l) HIV/AIDS education, awareness, and prevention in schools, villages and trade centers, 2) Sponsorship of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS (they currently have 40 HIV/AIDS orphans sponsored), and 3) Compassionate Home Care Program for those living with HIV/AIDS, referrals for antiretroviral medication, HIV+ support group and counseling to provide emotional social support, nutritional counseling and financial support. CRPCA is the Portland, Oregon based member group of the National Peace Corps Association. MCP is a center for vulnerable children, many of whom have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. EWB Portland is a group of volunteers including: engineers, public health and medical professionals, architects, teachers and more. EWB works on a variety of engineering projects. They work to provide consulting and assessment services to help local communities develop sustainable projects. ZAP purchases artwork from Weya artists to sell in the United States. They purchase art at double the price of other buyers. Proceeds from the sale of the artwork in the United States go to fund programs that benefit the artists in Weya. Funding helps to provide healthcare, materials for artwork, transportation, water projects and education. ZAP provides more than 75 students who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS with uniforms and school fees. They sell books and puzzles and the proceeds help keep the children of Weya in school. Our House provides residential care for people living with HIV/AIDS, including specialized nursing, social services and occupational therapy.
